Bridging the Gap
Bridging the Gap – Innovative Continuing Education in Cell and Gene Therapies
The Bridging the Gap project develops flexible and modular continuing education in stem cell and gene therapy. The initiative addresses the rapidly growing need for up-to-date knowledge and skills within the life sciences sector, where technological developments are advancing at high speed. Supported through PharmaNL’s Human Capital Growth program, the project aims to create future-proof education that helps professionals stay current in a fast-changing field. The project officially started in early 2026.
The project is led by Niels Geijsen (LUMC), in collaboration with Avans University of Applied Sciences and HU University of Applied Sciences Utrecht. The educational program is designed in a modular format, allowing participants to follow individual modules or complete a full learning pathway. The modules focus on stem cell research, gene editing, and cell and gene therapies, combining online learning with workshops and team-based learning. Gamification is also integrated to make the education interactive and practice-oriented.
“The field of cell and gene therapy is developing so rapidly that it is almost impossible for professionals to always stay up to date,” says Geijsen.
The modules are developed in English, while practical sessions can also be offered in Dutch depending on the target audience. The project works closely with companies at locations such as the Leiden Bio Science Park and in Utrecht. Partners including the Biotech Training Facility contribute practical expertise to ensure the courses align with industry needs, particularly in areas such as cleanroom training.
The program targets professionals with higher professional or academic backgrounds working across the pharmaceutical value chain, including researchers, laboratory specialists, biotech and pharmaceutical employees, clinicians, and analysts in healthcare. In addition, lecturers and researchers can integrate modules into their own educational programs. By offering flexible, modular education, the project helps professionals quickly acquire new knowledge and skills while supporting the sector in addressing the shortage of highly trained personnel.
Objective
To develop and sustainably embed modular continuing education in stem cell and gene therapy, enabling life sciences professionals to continuously update their knowledge and skills and apply them directly in practice.
